Juncheng Shang enters this US Open first-round matchup on hard courts as the clear market favorite against veteran Marco Trungelliti, reflecting Shang's superior peak ranking, left-handed baseline aggression, and stronger historical hard-court results despite a limited 5-7 record in 2026. Shang's recent Canadian Open run, including a win over Andrey Rublev, highlights his upside when healthy, though inactivity and an early Cincinnati exit underscore consistency concerns. Trungelliti, ranked No. 83 with a 27-23 seasonal mark heavy on clay, brings experience and solid recent hard-court form but faces a stylistic mismatch on this surface where his main-draw results lag. With no prior head-to-head, traders weigh Shang's youth and power against Trungelliti's grind-it-out resilience in what projects as a competitive opener.
