Édouard Philippe maintains a clear lead in trader consensus for the 2027 French presidential race within the centrist bloc due to his stronger polling track record as the sole representative of that space, broader appeal among center-right voters, and established positioning against far-right and left-wing challengers. Recent August 2026 surveys show him narrowing or tying with Jean-Luc Mélenchon at around 17% in first-round hypotheticals while Gabriel Attal trails slightly at 14-15%, with the gap between the two former prime ministers shrinking to statistical margins. Attal has intensified campaigning, advocated for an internal primary or extended debate, and highlighted policy divergences on issues like education and pensions during the late-August MEDEF forum, yet Philippe continues to benefit from perceptions of greater viability in potential runoffs against Rassemblement National candidates. The split in the fragmented centrist field risks diluting support for both, amplifying uncertainty ahead of any consolidation timeline.
