Iceland's August 29 referendum on resuming EU accession negotiations remains closely balanced, with recent Gallup polling showing voters split near evenly at 46% yes and 46% no. The centre-left coalition government, formed after the 2024 elections and including pro-EU parties, advanced the vote from a 2027 timeline amid concerns over U.S. tariffs on Icelandic exports and Arctic security dynamics linked to Greenland. Supporters highlight potential economic stability and a stronger voice in European affairs, while opponents emphasize risks to fisheries control and national sovereignty, core issues that stalled talks in 2013. Polls indicate stronger backing for opening negotiations than for eventual membership, making turnout and final campaign messaging decisive factors that could shift the narrow trader consensus either direction before voting concludes.
