President Donald Trump publicly endorsed a proposal in late April 2026 to rebrand Immigration and Customs Enforcement as National Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or NICE, citing a desire to soften the agency's public image. He reiterated the idea in May remarks while noting internal resistance from figures such as border czar Tom Homan. No legislation or executive action has advanced the formal name change through Congress or the Department of Homeland Security as of August 2026. Agency operations have instead centered on expanded enforcement, including traffic stops and deportations. Actual implementation would require congressional approval or a lengthy administrative process, limiting near-term prospects absent new legislative developments or administration directives.
