SpaceX independently advances its own plans for solar-powered AI satellites under Musk’s vision of scaling to gigawatts of space-based capacity, citing advantages in continuous solar power and lower long-term costs versus terrestrial data centers strained by AI energy demands. A major June 2026 terrestrial compute agreement between the firms for xAI facilities highlights their deepening ties but does not extend to orbit. Key near-term catalysts include prototype launch decisions, Starship progress, and any formal partnership announcements that could resolve or extend the market timeline amid technical hurdles like radiation shielding and inter-satellite links.
