Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani stated on August 23, 2026, that talks froze after the Iran conflict began and contacts halted following Israel’s August 18 strike on the Abu al-Duhur airbase, though he expects resumption soon under U.S. pressure and described earlier near-agreements on security arrangements. A January 2026 Paris-mediated mechanism for intelligence sharing and de-escalation marked prior progress, yet recent escalations and differing priorities—Syria seeking an end to strikes first, Israel insisting on enforceable red lines—constrain momentum toward broader normalization. U.S. envoy involvement and shared regional interests provide limited catalysts, while territorial and confidence-building gaps dominate trader assessments of timelines.
