Nicolás Maduro has been in U.S. federal custody since his January 2026 capture during a U.S. military operation in Caracas, facing narco-terrorism and cocaine conspiracy charges in the Southern District of New York that carry potential life sentences. With a June 2027 trial date set, the closely matched probabilities between no prison time and lengthy terms reflect uncertainty over the defense's planned immunity and capture-legality challenges, possible plea negotiations, extradition requests from other nations, and the precedent of historical cases like Manuel Noriega. Recent court proceedings have focused on scheduling without resolving core motions, leaving trader consensus sensitive to upcoming pre-trial rulings, evidence disclosures, or shifts in U.S.-Venezuela diplomatic dynamics that could alter outcomes before or during proceedings.
