Andy Burnham’s recent transition to prime minister has sharpened trader focus on his PMQs style and policy signals, following a debut session dominated by opposition pressure over borrowing costs and tax plans amid market volatility. His responses emphasized fiscal responsibility while declining to lock in spending details ahead of the October budget, echoing his Greater Manchester record of pragmatic delivery and “new politics” messaging. Public and media reaction highlighted both his confident dispatch-box presence and the challenges of managing expectations in a tight fiscal environment. The next PMQs offers a key test of momentum, with traders watching for any shifts in tone on welfare, defence funding, or European relations that could shape longer-term narrative around his leadership.
