Somaliland’s House of Elders approved a 27-month term extension for the House of Representatives and district councils in April 2026, shifting the mandate expiration from July 2026 to October 2028 after the National Electoral Commission had recommended only a 10-month delay. The decision cited security challenges in regions such as Sool, Sanaag, and Awdal, widespread drought affecting voter registration, and technical hurdles in updating electoral rolls and equipment. With the current date in August 2026 and no polls held since the 2021 contest that gave Waddani a plurality, traders assign overwhelming probability to no parliamentary election occurring before 2027. An earlier vote would require reversal of the Guurti extension, accelerated National Electoral Commission preparations, or major improvement in eastern security conditions.
