As of August 2026, confirmed advances remain limited to infiltration attempts and small gains east and southeast of the city, with Russian units positioned roughly 12–19 kilometers away amid Ukrainian counterattacks that have halted several pushes. Russian forces are sustaining a battlefield air interdiction campaign using glide bombs, drones, and strikes on bridges and logistics nodes to isolate defenders, while Ukrainian units maintain positions and report localized successes in adjacent sectors. Trader assessments reflect the slow pace of ground progress, high Ukrainian defensive density, and historical patterns of attritional fighting in the Donbas, where rapid urban captures have proven difficult without major shifts in manpower or external support.
