This market will resolve to “Yes” if the United States expels a Brazilian diplomat stationed in the United States between market creation and September 30, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. For the purposes of this market, “expel” refers to a formal action by the United States requiring the Brazilian diplomat to leave the United States, including a declaration of persona non grata. Revocation of a diplomat’s visa or denial of entry to the United States will not alone suffice. An announcement of a qualifying expulsion will suffice for a “Yes” resolution, regardless of whether the relevant diplomat actually leaves the country. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the United States government; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.US-Brazil diplomatic friction centers on visa disputes and ambassadorial approvals tied to Brazil’s October presidential election and trade tensions. The US revoked Brazilian Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti’s visa in early August as a reciprocal step after Brazil denied visas to US officials and delayed agrément for Washington’s nominee, yet State Department statements explicitly distinguished this from expulsion and left room for reversal upon resolution. A late-August phone call between Presidents Trump and Lula maintained a constructive tone, with follow-up talks planned on tariffs and bilateral issues. Traders assign only a 3.5% chance of expulsion by September 30 because such a formal persona non grata declaration exceeds the calibrated measures taken so far and risks broader rupture ahead of the vote. Sudden further escalation, such as renewed election-interference claims or stalled nominee approval, remains the main pathway that could still shift the slim probability.
