OpenAI's September 8 release of ChatGPT Images 2.5, with sharper subject preservation, more reliable multi-turn edits, and up to 50% faster generation, has tightened the race for best image-editing AI by end of September. Leaderboards show OpenAI's GPT Image variants trading narrow Elo leads with Google's Nano Banana Gemini models, Microsoft's MAI-Image series, and Black Forest Labs FLUX Kontext entries, while Luma AI, ByteDance Seedream, and others remain competitive on precision, inpainting, and identity consistency. Traders view the field as highly fluid, with differentiation hinging on real-world edit accuracy, benchmark updates, and any surprise announcements before month-end resolution.
