Mark Brown's commanding position in the Cook Islands prime minister market reflects his Cook Islands Party's strong performance in the August 12, 2026 general election, where the party secured 12 seats plus commitments from multiple independents for an 18-seat supermajority in the 24-seat parliament. As the incumbent since 2020, Brown retained his Takuvaine-Tutakimoa seat and guided the party to a fifth consecutive term despite prior tensions with New Zealand over China partnerships, resolved in part by an April 2026 defence declaration that restored aid flows. Opposition parties, including the Democrats led by Tina Browne and the Cook Islands United Party under Teariki Heather, won limited seats, with Browne losing her constituency. While final declaration votes and potential petitions in tight races could adjust margins, the preliminary results and cross-party alignments indicate limited scope for alternative leadership outcomes in the near term.
