Abiy Ahmed's commanding position in Ethiopia's next prime minister market stems from his Prosperity Party's decisive June 2026 parliamentary election victory, which delivered 438 of 501 seats and a clear majority to select the prime minister. With the new House of Peoples' Representatives expected to convene and confirm the government by early October, traders see minimal near-term disruption to his continuation in office. Ongoing regional instability in areas such as Amhara and Oromia, along with limited opposition participation, has not altered the parliamentary arithmetic. Scenarios that could still shift odds include unforeseen health developments, major internal party realignments, or sudden escalations in security conditions capable of prompting leadership changes before the formal selection process concludes.
