Recent strength in the U.S. services sector, highlighted by the August ISM Services PMI rising to 55.4 from 54.1 and beating forecasts, underpins trader expectations for a September reading clustered in the mid-50s. Robust new orders at a multi-year high and elevated business activity reflect sustained domestic demand and AI-related investment, while supplier deliveries remained slow and prices paid climbed to a four-year peak amid tariffs and Middle East tensions. Offsetting these positives, the employment sub-index stayed in contraction territory for a second month, signaling hiring caution amid cost pressures. With the services sector comprising over two-thirds of GDP, the September release—due early October—will be closely watched for implications on inflation trends and monetary policy expectations.
