Recent polls for the September 20, 2026 Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Landtag election show the AfD holding a consistent lead at 35-36 percent, positioning it as the likely strongest party, while the SPD under Minister President Manuela Schwesig trails at 28-29 percent but remains well ahead of the Left party (11-12 percent), CDU (9-10 percent), and smaller groups including the BSW, Greens, and FDP. This stable ordering in surveys from INSA and Infratest dimap through mid-August explains trader consensus on second place. The incumbent SPD-Left coalition lacks a projected majority, and no major campaign shifts or late events have altered the two-party contest at the top in recent weeks. Other parties trail sufficiently far behind to face long odds for a runner-up finish.
