Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party secured a commanding parliamentary supermajority in Ethiopia’s June 2026 general election, winning 438 of the contested seats and clearing the path for the legislature to reappoint him prime minister when it convenes later this year. This outcome reflects the party’s organizational dominance and the fragmented state of opposition groups amid security disruptions that prevented voting in parts of Tigray and Amhara. Ongoing insurgencies in Amhara and Oromia, renewed tensions with Tigray forces, and reports of emerging rebel alliances introduce uncertainty, yet the parliamentary system and ruling-party control of the electoral process create significant structural barriers to an immediate leadership change. Late-breaking escalations in conflict or internal party shifts remain the primary variables that could alter the current trader consensus.
