Washington Observatory summit measurements through mid-August 2026 indicate unusually calm conditions, with peak gusts reaching only 55 mph early in the month and daily averages near 23 mph, well below the long-term August norm of 24.5 mph. Stronger winds at the 6,288-foot site typically arise from tight pressure gradients associated with nor’easters, cold fronts, or tropical remnants, which can produce gusts exceeding 100 mph on the Saffir-Simpson-influenced scale for non-tropical systems; the all-time August record stands at 147 mph from 2020. With roughly one week remaining, forecasters are monitoring any late-month low-pressure development that could elevate readings before the final F6 daily summary is compiled. Traders weighing these factors focus on the observatory’s calibrated anemometer data and the low likelihood of extreme events in the final days of the month.
