The market's 96.7% implied probability for "No" reflects the brief remaining window until August 31 and the established global rate of roughly one to two magnitude-8.0+ earthquakes per year, with USGS records confirming no events above M7.7 so far in August 2026. Recent activity, including a M6.7 in Peru and a M6.0 off Japan, shows no foreshocks, aftershock sequences, or stress-transfer patterns on major subduction zones that would elevate near-term risk. Seismologists note that M8+ ruptures typically require decades of strain accumulation and are not reliably preceded by detectable signals in the final days. While an unforeseen event on an unmonitored fault remains theoretically possible, the absence of elevated alerts from NOAA or USGS monitoring networks keeps trader consensus firmly aligned with historical base rates.

This market will resolve to “Yes” if 1 or more earthquakes with a magnitude of 8.0 or higher occur anywhere on Earth between market creation and August 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”.
The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until the end of the seventh day after the resolution time, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
