The market-implied odds heavily favor no magnitude 9.0 or greater earthquake before 2027 due to the extreme rarity of such events on the moment magnitude scale, with only a handful recorded globally in the past century according to USGS historical data. The most recent was the 2011 Tohoku event at 9.0, preceded by the 2004 Sumatra quake, creating long recurrence intervals for great subduction-zone ruptures capable of releasing that energy. With roughly four months remaining, current seismic monitoring shows no elevated activity or foreshock patterns that would shift consensus. While forecast uncertainty exists and an unanticipated megathrust event could still occur, trader conviction reflects the low baseline probability supported by tectonic and paleoseismic records.
